March is Reading Month ~ Give a book. . .Get a book! Students will be given the opportunity to bring in up to 5 gently used books to exchange for 5 different gently used books. We are asking that the students bring their books in during the weeks of 3/5 – 3/16 on their media day. The exchange will take place during their media time the week of 3/19 – 3/23.Girl, Books, School, Reading, … When deciding which books to bring, consider the following questions: Is this a book that you do not mind ever seeing again? Is the book in good shape? Would you want it if you saw it at the book exchange? There is nothing as wonderful to a child as a new book. I know that books are expensive and what a better way to save some money and get some new reading material for your child at the same time? While this is optional, I hope everyone chooses to participate. Thank you for helping to make reading a priority in your child’s life. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me. Sincerely, Mrs. Erin Woods ~ Media Specialist ~ 313-827-1150 woods@appublicschools.com

CREATING ENFORCEABLE LIMITS FOR KIDS

“I’m not going to tell you again…” Have you ever said something like this to your child? Many days it’s so easy to go about my day and do whatever it takes to get my kids to comply. Sometimes I just don’t want to hear any more crying!

But when I try positive reinforcement, punishment, gentle parking and nothing works I start to get frustrated. What if I told you there was a technique to improve your child’s behavior without yelling, stick charts, time-outs or losing your mind!? This is where creating enforceable lists for kids comes into play.

WHAT IS AN ENFORCEABLE LIMIT?

The concept of enforceable limits can be applied to teaching as well as parenting. It’s a technique from Love & Logic. Side note, this is not a sponsored post. As as psychologist and parent I am firm believer of the techniques from Love & Logic. They make sense and they work.

RELATED: Setting Boundaries With Kids

So back to enforceable limits. A big take home message: The more perceived control a person has, the more likely he or she is to cooperate and listen.

Instead of always telling your child what to do, try telling them what you will do instead.

Parenting Tips! Tired of always yelling at your kids to behave? Try setting enforceable limits instead. This is a great parenting technique based on Love and Logic.

MORE EXAMPLES OF ENFORCEABLE LIMITS

  • I’ll give you a new toy as soon as you put your blocks away.
  • I’ll take you outside when you ask nicely and wait calmly.
  • I read stories before bedtime to children who are sitting quietly.

*The biggest thing is to follow through! After you give an enforceable limit, wait until they are actually doing what you asked before you do your part of the equation.

If they are crying and it’s starting to get to you, say the request calmly and walk away to recollect your thoughts. You don’t want to loose your cool as they won’t get you a better behaved child.

In this article I gave you examples of things you can actually enforce.

Instead of shouting “CLEAN UP YOUR TOYS RIGHT NOW” or “YOU’RE GETTING ON MY LAST NERVE, JUST STOP!” you can set an enforceable limit.

We can’t MAKE our kids do anything (if only!) and many times when we raise our voices it actually makes things worse. Instead of listening to what you are saying, they hear your anger or frustration and they tend to concentrate on that instead of what you are actually saying. This in turn may aggravate the situation even more.

Again, I’m not saying all this to make you feel bad! We all need reminders to calm down and think before we talk. Our words are so powerful. Why not use them to our advantage?

Morning Drop off

Objective :

We are trying to make drop off a little easier and safer for all parents and children. With a little help from you, our mornings will be a little less frustrating.

Rules:

Pull up to designated DROP OFF areas.

DO NOT get out of your car, we will open your door and get your children and their belongings out on the passenger side.

Please drive off so the next car can get in and drop off , there’s no need to sit and wait. With the help of parent volunteers and the safety patrol, your children will get into the building safely.

DO NOT park across the street and let your kids out. This is unsafe . This slows down traffic  and teaches children it’s okay to walk between cars.

PLEASE use the crosswalks, which have Safety Patrol students .

There is no need for the negative comments made to the volunteers, who are donating their time for YOUR child’s safety .

If you drop off at the MAIN ENTRANCE, please let busses in and out. This drop off zone is intended for the buses!

If you drop your kids off at 8:05 please do so and move on.

Please follow the arrows according to the map. This makes for an easier flow and less backups .

Enter Carter on Moore , Becker from Wick

THANK YOU

Thank you to all the parents or whomever drops off children in the morning for your cooperation. With only a few of us out there, we are currently looking for more volunteers. I get the weather isn’t ideal but just helping kids get to the dry, ice free, mud puddle free sidewalk safely, it’s helping .

To volunteer please contact Kelly Kirby at  kellydixon58@yahoo.com

Shout Out: Way To Go Mrs. Bowdell (PE Teacher, Lindemann)

On Friday, January 12thMrs. Bowdell(Lindemann Elementary School) and the girls scouts troop leaders organized an after school special event where the girls scouts troops learned about several fitness activities. The event was set up into multiple stations taught by parent volunteers and several AP staff members who were also college athletes. A few of the stations included: Carrie Solak attended MSU(softball) and taught the girls several softball techniques, Dana Brown attended WMU (CC & Track) and taught the girls several running techniques, and Krissy Bowdell EMU (basketball) taught the girls several basketball techniques. The goal of the event was to encourage and promote fitness in girls/ women, teach the girls about new sports, and ultimately help the girls to earn their fitness badge for girl scouts.
We would like to thank Krissy Bowdell, Carrie Solak & Dana Brown for your participation with this awesome event!

Hearing Screening
Hearing screens at Lindemann were completed back in December. Kindergarten, first, second, and fourth grades participated in the hearing screening process. Any child in third or fifth grade who failed the school hearing screen last year was likely re-screened this year. If your child did not pass the hearing screen, you should have received a letter from the Wayne County Health Department just prior to Christmas break. Many, but not all, failed hearing screens are a result of middle ear fluid/ear infections. Follow-up with a doctor is recommended, and the letter includes a section for a physician to complete following the examination of your child. The completed letter should be returned to the Wayne County Health Department. If Wayne County Health Department does not receive this completed letter back in a timely manner, a second letter is sent to remind families of the expected follow-up measures. If any parent or teacher has concerns regarding a child’s failed hearing screen or ability to hear, please contact our Teacher Consultant for Hearing Impairment, Lesli Sutherland:

STAYING HEALTHY

Winter time brings some additional challenges to school aside from the cold and snowy weather.  Below are a few reminders for helping our students to stay safe and healthy at school:

  • Wash hands frequently — especially after using the restroom, coughing, or sneezing.
  • Cover your cough — cough or sneeze into your elbow or a tissue.
  • Encourage children to put hats and gloves into coat sleeves when hanging among others’ items.

MICHIGAN PARENT DASHBOARD FOR SCHOOL TRANSPARENCY

  • How well is Lindemann Elementary School helping students achieve state standards?
  • How many instructional staff per student does Lindemann Elementary School employ?
  • How many Allen Park High School students graduate within 4, 5, and 6 years?
  • What is the attendance rate for students at Lindemann Elementary School?

Parents and other caregivers of a school-aged child now can easily find answers to these questions and many more through one user-friendly online tool. Michigan’s new Parent Dashboard for School Transparency(or “Parent Dashboard”) makes it easier for parents to see many types of information about any public school in Michigan, including public school academies (charter schools).

The new dashboard is designed especially for parents and other caregivers. It will report on more than 20 different factors—or measures—that parents and other stakeholders have said are important to them when evaluating the quality of a school. Families and others can use the dashboard to get a more complete picture of how their child’s school is serving students. They also can use the dashboard to compare a school’s performance with the average performance of other similar Michigan schools.

The new easy-to-use Parent Dashboard:

  • provides one easy location where parents and caregivers can view building-level information and data
  • can be accessed on any computer or mobile device
  • includes a tutorial video that can help you navigate through the various types of information available
  • offers a more balanced picture of school quality, since it contains information about more than just test scores

Information in the Parent Dashboard:

  • comes from data that are already collected from schools
  • can be viewed for a whole school, or viewers can dig in deeper to see performance for certain groups of students
  • can inform decisions and encourage richer conversations about school progress—with students, with other parents, with school leaders, and within communities
  • complements other state accountability tools such as the School Report Card (required by federal law), financial data reporting (required by Michigan law), and other state, district, and building reports (MI School Data)

We encourage parents to check out Lindemann Elementary School’s Parent Dashboard, and tell us which measures excite you most. We also want to know where you think we need to improve.  Equipped with this information, we hope to have richer conversations about our school and its students.

The new Parent Dashboard is a “living tool” that will continue to add information and adapt to meet parents’ needs. Parents and others are invited to send feedback to MDE-ParentDashboard@michigan.gov

COLD WEATHER GUIDELINES

In an effort to have a consistent set of guidelines for families and school staff to reference, we will be continue to follow these guidelines for cold weather gear requirements.  Please ensure that your child is dressed appropriately each day to stay warm at school.  Please contact our office if you do not have access to warm gear for your child this year so we may help you.

** Although temperatures in much of December were too cold to get our Bobcats outside, we are hoping that we will get out there this week!  Bundle up, Bobcats!!

WINTER GEAR GUIDELINES

Our hope is that we can get students out into the fresh air at recess time as often as possible this winter.  We will try to get students out for recess either on the playground or for a walk around the grounds whenever the wind chill is above 20 degrees.  In order to do this, we need to ensure that students are dressed appropriately for the weather.  Please see the guidelines below for appropriate winter weather gear.  If you need help providing a warm coat, hat, or gloves for your child, please contact me.  We are happy to help.
